Image title
Half-length portrait of James Weir Hogg, to front, dressed in dark coat and white stock, against a dark red curtain, c.1820-5. James Weir Hogg (1790-1876) practised at the Calcutta Bar from 1814-22, and was Registrar of the Supreme Court from 1822-33. In that year he returned to England, where he entered Parliament. He became a Director of the East India Company in 1839, and Chairman in 1846 and 1852, 'representing, practically, the E.I.Co. in Parliament' (Buckland). He was made a Baronet in 1836, and became in 1858 one of the original members of the Council of India, from which he retired only in 1872. Hogg looks relatively young in this portrait which must have been taken during Chinnery's last years in Calcutta.
