Alsace and Gerardmer Northeastern France, 1958

Alsace is a historical region in north-eastern France on the Rhine River plain. Bordering Germany and Switzerland, it has alternated between German and French control over the centuries and reflects a mix of those cultures. Its capital, Strasbourg, is centered on the Ill River’s Grand Île island, bordered by canals and home to the Gothic Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg. Then on to Gérardmer which is a town in northeastern France, near the German border. It’s known as a ski resort, with a high-speed chairlift, tree-lined slopes and a slalom course. Including a shot of Gérardmer Hôtel du Saut des Cuves which was burnt out in 1985 and demolished in 1997.
