Image description: 1788 Source/Shelfmark: P3314 Hastings is shown in the centre of this engraving, with two of his accusers, Burke and Fox, to the left, and two of his supporters, Thurlow and George III, to the right. Each side tugs at the strings of diamonds - the wealth of Bengal - emerging from their victim, in a vivid image of the true motives of both accusers and defenders. The King sits on his throne, eating a string of jewels and remarking, 'These is provision for a K-g poor soul. I'll take care he shan't be hurt'. This refers to the diamond that Hastings had given to him, as a gift from an Indian ruler, the Nizam of the Deccan. Published: 1788
