Supposedly Duchesse de Biron

Netherlandish School. Oil painting on panel, Supposedly Duchesse de Biron, Netherlandish School, inscribed, top right: 1613. A three-quarter-length portrait of a young woman turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, her left hand holds a pair of embroidered gloves and her right hand rests on the arm of a painted leather chairchair. She wears a compound cartwheel ruff with her black, self-patternee silk dress, with long sleeves and gold-embroidered bodice inset, which also forms a long stomacher. A farthingale is worn beneath her full skirt. Her hair is covered with a white, lace cap, matching her cuffs. She wears a gold bracelet on each wrist and rings on each hand. A chatelaine, of gold attached to a massive gold chain which encircles her waist and is looped back into her right hand. wife of the French Ambassador to the Court of James I. However, thought more likely to be the wife of a Netherlandish Burgher, despite the inscription 'Duchesse de Biron' top left. White catalogue number '77' l.l. Oxburgh Hall, Norfolk (Accredited Museum)
