In the wake of the Pilgrim Fathers. In 1620, reigning James I Stuart, numerous Puritans left England and on board a sailing ship, the Mayflower, reached the shores of Massachusetts. These Pilgrim Fathers were the first settlers in North America. Now, more than three centuries later, a ship that is a faithful copy of that sailing ship, the Mayflower II, remaking the same route, has left Plymouth on its way to Plymouth, in the United States. The crew, commanded by Captain Villiers, is made up of 33 sailors who wear costumes of the time. Illustration for Courier Sunday, 5 May 1957.
