Image description

attributed to Andrea Locatelli (Rome 1695 – Rome 1741?). Oil painting on canvas, The Mill (after Claude Lorrain), attributed to Andrea Locatelli (1695 -1741), 1700 - 1741. A variant copy of the painting by Claude Lorrain (Champagne 1604 - Rome 1682) in the collection of the Galleria Doria Pamphilj, Rome. In the right foreground of this arcadian scene, two dancing figures wearing blue and yellow classical drapery are watched by a small crowd of onlookers; a group of five women are seated beneath large, overhanging trees at the far right and four are seated on rocks to the left. Urns and other objects relating to refreshment lie are set on the ground between the two groups. A herd of cattle grazing at the far left of the landscape stray into a stream close to a bridge at centre left. Beyond the bridge, the scene opens out onto a river estuary on which are dotted three small fishing boats. A watermill is located on the left bank of the river behind a group of tall trees, while further along the right bank are two classical temples, one round, the other rectangular. Mountains rise up against the horizon in the far distance and a peachy haziness suffusing the blue sky suggests that it is late in the day. Stourhead, Wiltshire (Accredited Museum)
