The Winter War 1939-40 (b/w photo)

The Winter War. A military conflict between the Soviet union and Finland. It began with a Soviet invasion on november 1939 when Soviet infantery crossed the border on the Karelian Isthmus. About 9500 Swedish volunteer soldiers participated in the war. Pictured a young woman on top of a building in Helsinki. She is part of the air defense personnel and has the important task to monitor and report any enemy aircrafts. A telephone is seen. The weather during the war was exteremely cold and was as low as minus 40 degrees. She is therefore wearing a warm fur coat. January 1940
