Image description

William Godolphin, Viscount Rialton, later Marquess of Blandford (c.1700-1731) and his Sister, Lady Henrietta Godolphin, later Duchess of Newcastle (d. 1776); previously attributed to Michael Dahl (Stockholm 1656/9 – London 1743). A double three-quarter-length portrait of the children of Francis, 2nd Earl of Godolphin (inscribed thus, upper left) and 1st Baron of Godolphin of Helston (1678 - 1766). 'Willigo' is pictured here with his sister. He is standing with his hand resting on globe pointing at England with a landscape beyond. He allegedly lived a dissipated life and married Maria Catherine de Jong, daughter of the Burgomaster of Utrecht without his parent's consent. He would have inherited fortunes of Godolphin and Marborough. Last direct heir. She, 'Harriot', is seated, in a green dress with a garland of flowers. She married Thomas Pelham Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle in 1717
