Image description

Penny token of copper. Obverse depicting the White House at Kew. The White House was built for Frederick, Prince of Wales (1707-51) from 1731 to a design by William Kent (1685-1748). It was demolished in 1802. The edge of the token is inscribed: 'I promise to pay on demand the bearer one penny' In the late 18th and early 19th century, Britain suffered an acute shortage of currency. Many enterprising merchants and traders produced their own unofficial penny and halfpenny tokens. These often depicted local landmarks, such as the White House shown here Maker: Jacobs (Middlesex/London)
