Star Vega in Lyra - Star Vega in Lyra - Vega (Alpha Lyrae) is the main star of the constellation Lyra, located only 25.4 light years from the Sun. It is the second brightest star in the northern hemisphere after Sirius. Due to the precession of the equinoxes, Vega will take the place of the polar star indicating the north in the year 14,000. Vega (Alpha Lyrae) is the brightest star of Lyra constellation, located at 25.4 light years from the Sun. It is the second most luminous star in northern hemisphere. Because of the precession of the equinoxes, Vega will point north celestial pole in year 14,000
Constellation of Lyra - Constellation of Lyra - Constellation of Lyra with bright star Vega. Lyra, The Lyre is one of the 48 constellations listed by Ptolemy, and represents a stringed musical instrument widely used in Greek classical times. Apparently, the young god Hermes (Mercury) created the lyre from the body of a large tortoise shell covered with animal hide sporting antelope horns. The instrument is associated with the virtues of moderation and equilibrium, and was given by Hermes to his half - brother Apollo, who in turn gave it to his son Orpheus. Lyra is a small constellation, but rather obvious to the eye. Its principal star, Vega, is the second brightest star in the northern hemisphere and is also interesting because it is seen almost pole - on and is one of the most rapidly rotating stars known, so it could see it from a different direction it would appear distinctly flattened. Because of precession, Vega is destined to be the Pole Star in about 12,000 years. Entirely unconnected to this, the direction of the Sun around the Milky Way galaxy, with reference to external galaxies, is known as the solar apex. This point on the sky, as determined from optical observations, is in Lyra, close to its border with Hercules, and the Sun and planets are moving in this direction at about 300 kilometers per second

Kepler-62f a super-Earth exoplanet, 2000
Planetary nebula M57 (NGC 6720) in Lyra - The Ring nebula (M57) in Lyra - The planetary nebula of Lyra (M57) is located about 2000 years - light from Earth. With a magnitude of 9.0, this nebula is easily observed with a small telescope. A planetary nebula is a gas shell from a small late-life star whose heart collapsed to become a white dwarf and expelled the outer layers of its matter. The Ring Nebula, M57, is the most famous example of a planetary nebula. Located about 2,000 light years away, it has an apparent diameter of 1 arc minute and a real diameter of about one light year. At magnitude 9.0 its high surface brightness makes it an easy object, even from the city and even with small telescopes. Despite their name, planetary nebulae have nothing to do with planets. They were named originally because their discoverers observed them visually and they did not appear as stellar point sources, but rather as small diffuse objects that resembled the outer planets in our solar system such as Uranus and Neptune when seen in a telescope. Planetary nebula are shells of gas shed by stars late in their life cycles after using up all of their nuclear fuel. The star then ejects a significant portion of its mass in a gaseous shell, which is illuminated by its extremely hot central star, which is just the core left from the original star. The star at the center of the Ring nebula has a surface temperature of 216,000 degrees Farenheit or 120,000 degrees Celsius. Our own star, the Sun, is expected to undergo the same process in a couple of billion years. Planetary nebulae do not last long at all in cosmic terms, the shell of gas expands and diffuse, becoming invisible, and the star turns into a white dwarf

Exoplanets around Kepler - 9 - Exoplanets around Kepler - 9 - Artist's view of Kepler star - 9 located about 2000 years ago - light in the constellation of Lyra. Discovered by the American satellite Kepler, Kepler 9 is the first star discovered in front of which several exoplanets are observed in transit. This artist's concept illustrates the two Saturn - sized planets discovered by Nasa's Kepler mission. The star system is oriented edge - on, as seen by Kepler, such that both planets cross in front, or transit, their star, named Kepler - 9. This is the first star system found to have multiple transiting planets
Planetary nebula M57 (NGC 6720) in Lyra - M57 (NGC 6720) planetary nebula in Lyra - The planetary nebula of Lyra (M57) is located about 2000 years - light from Earth. With a magnitude of 9.0, this nebula is easily observed with a small telescope. A planetary nebula is a gas shell from a small late-life star whose heart collapsed to become a white dwarf and expelled the outer layers of its matter. Composite image obtained by different telescopes. Planetary nebulae do not last long at all in cosmic terms, the shell of gas expands and diffuse, becoming invisible, and the star turns into a white dwarf. Planetary nebula M57 (NGC 6720) in Lyra - The Ring nebula M57 in Lyra - The planetary nebula of Lyra (M57) is located about 2000 years - light from Earth. A planetary nebula is a gas shell from a small late-life star whose heart collapsed to become a white dwarf and expelled the outer layers of its matter. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope. This close - up, visible - light view by Nasa's Hubble Space Telescope reveals new details of the Ring Nebula. The object is tilted towards Earth so that astronomers see the ring face - on. The Hubble observations reveal that the nebula's shape is more complicated than astronomers thought. The blue gas in the nebula's center is actually a football - shaped structure that pierces the red doughnut - shaped material. Hubble also uncovers the detailed structure of the dark, irregular knots of dense gas embedded along the inner rim of the ring. The knots look like spokes in a bicycle. The Hubble images have allowed the research team to match up the knots with the spikes of light around the bright, main ring, which are a shadow effect. The Ring Nebula is a well - known planetary nebula, the glowing remains of a Sun - like star. The tiny white dot in the center of the nebula is the star's hot core, called a white dwarf. The nebula is about 2,000 light - years away in the constellation Lyra. The structure measures roughly one light - year across. The Hubble observations were taken Sept. 19, 2011, by the Wide Field Camera 3. In the image, the deep blue color in the center represents helium; the cyan color of the inner ring is the glow of hydrogen and oxygen; and the reddish color of the outer ring is from nitrogen and sulfur
Constellation of Hercules - Constellation of Hercules - Constellation of Hercules and Boreal Crown. On the left, the bright star is Vega de la Lyre. Hercules, the Roman Hero, is best known for his twelve labours, mentioned throughout the Greek constellation legends as Herakles, who is sometimes identified with the much older (5000 BC) Sumerian strong man Gilgamesh. To the Greeks he was the son of Zeus and the earthly queen Alkmene. Zeus' goddess wife Hera was not best pleased and sought to destroy Herakles. Later he was to accomplish eight heroic acts as well as his famous 12 labours, these last perhaps representing the Sun's passage through the zodiacal constellations. The constellation is the fifth largest in the sky but does not catch the eye and has no bright stars rivaling Vega in adjoining Lyra or even the much fainter Gemma in Corona Borealis to the west. However, there are many interesting double stars in Hercules as well as the northern hemisphere's finest globular cluster M13

Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The Hubble Space Telescope has captured the sharpest view yet of M57, the Ring Nebula in Lyra, which is the most famous of all planetary nebulae. In this image, the telescope has looked down a tunnel of gas cast off by a dying star thousands of years ago. This photo reveals elongated dark clumps of material embedded in the gas at the edge of the nebula, and the dying central star floating in a blue haze of hot gas. The nebula is about a light - year in diameter, and is located some 2,000 light - years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Lyra

Swan and Lyra Constellations - Cygnus and Lyra constellations - Upper left, near the nebula North America (NGC 7000), the brightest star in the constellation of Swan, Deneb; the Swan covers most of the image. On the top right, Vega de la Lyre, the fifth brightest star in the sky, located about 25 years away from Earth. Lyra is at the upper right of the photo and Cygnus takes of most of the rest of the frame. Brilliant Vega, the fifth brightest star in the night sky, is the brightest star in the image. It is located about 25 light years away. Bright red emission nebulae can also be seen in Cygnus, including the North America Nebula and nebulosity around Gamma Cygni at left. Deneb, visible just above and to the right of the North America Nebula, is the 20th brightest star in the night sky and is located about 1,500 light years away. The rich star clouds in Cygnus are broken by large dark lanes and rifts in the summer Milky Way. The dark lanes are clouds of dark matter that obscure the stars behind them
Star Vega in the Lyre - Star Vega in infrared - Vega (Alpha Lyrae) is the main star of the constellation Lyra, located only 25.4 light years from the Sun. It is the second brightest star after Sirius in the northern hemisphere. It's seen here in infrared by the Spitzer space telescope. Observed in this wavelength, the dust cloud surrounding the star appears. Nasa's Spitzer Space Telescope captured these images of the star Vega, located 25 light years away in the constellation Lyra. Spitzer was able to detect the heat radiation from the cloud of dust around the star and found that the debris disk is much larger than previously thought. This side - by - side comparison, taken by Spitzer's multiband imaging photometer, shows the warm infrared glows from dust particles orbiting the star at wavelengths of 24 microns (on the left in blue) and 70 microns (on the right in red). Both images show a very large, circular and smooth debris disk. The disk radius extends to at least 815 astronomical units. (One astronomical unit is the distance from Earth to the Sun, which is 150 - million kilometers or 93 - million miles). Scientists compared the surface brightness of the disk in the infrared wavelengths to determine the temperature distribution of the disk and then refer the corresponding particle size in the disk. Most of the particles in the disk are only a few microns in size, or 100 times smaller than a grain of Earth sand. These fine dust particles originate from collisions of embryonic planets near the star at a radius of approximately 90 astronomical units, and are then blown away by Vega's intense radiation. The mass and short lifetime of these small particles indicate that the disk detected by Spitzer is the aftermath of a large and relatively recent collision, involving bodies perhaps as big as the planet Pluto. The images are 3 arcminutes on each side. North is oriented upward and east is to the left

Exoplanete Kepler - 62f - Kepler - 62f is an exoplanet orbiting Kepler - 62, a star located about 1200 years from the Solar System in the constellation Lyra. Kepler - 62f is a super Earth located in the living area of its star. In this illustration, the bright star on the right of the planet is Kepler - 62nd. This artist's concept depicts in the foreground planet Kepler - 62f, a super - Earth - size planet in the habitable zone of its star which is seen peeking out from behind the right edge of the planet. The small shining object farther to the right is Kepler - 62e which orbits on the inner edge of the habitable zone of the star. If someday in the distant future we landed on the right spot on Kepler - 62f, just before “” sunrise”” we'd be treated to a lovely view of Kepler - 62e as a “” morning star”” much like Venus often appears for us on Earth

Colliding galaxy Ngc 6745 in Lyra - Colliding galaxy NGC 6745 in Lyra - The spiral galaxy NGC 6745 is located about 206 million years away - light from Earth. This galaxy is double; a second galaxy at the bottom right of the image collides with it, causing star formation. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope in 1996. A large spiral galaxy, with its nucleus still intact, peers at the smaller passing galaxy (almost out of the field of view at lower right). These galaxies did not merely interact gravitationally as they passed one another, they actually collided. When galaxies collide, the stars that normally comprise the major portion of the luminous mass of each of the two galaxies will almost never collide with each other but will pass rather freely between each other with little damage. This occurs because the physical size of individual stars is tiny compared to their typical separations, making the chance of physical encounter relatively small. In our own Milky Way galaxy, the space between our Sun and our nearest stellar neighbor, Proxima Centauri (part of the Alpha Centauri triple system), is a vast 4.3 light - years. However, the situation is quite different for the interstellar media in the above two galaxies - material consisting largely of clouds of atomic and molecular gases and of tiny particles of matter and dust, strongly coupled to the gas. Wherever the interstellar clouds of the two galaxies collide, they do not freely move past each other without interruption but, rather, suffer a damaging collision. High relative velocities cause ram pressures at the surface of contact between the interacting interstellar clouds. This pressure, in turn, produces material densities sufficiently extreme as to trigger star formation through gravitational collapse. The hot blue stars in this image are evidence of this star formation

Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope and the Large Binocular Telescope. In this composite image, visible - light observations by Nasa's Hubble Space Telescope are combined with infrared data from the ground - based Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona to assemble a dramatic view of the well - known Ring Nebula. Called a planetary nebula, the Ring Nebula is the glowing remains of a Sun - like star. The object is tilted towards Earth so that astronomers see the ring face - on. The Hubble observations reveal that the nebula's shape is more complicated than astronomers thought. The faint, scallop - shaped material surrounding the ring was expelled by the star during the early stages of the planetary nebula formation. This outer material was imaged by the Large Binocular Telescope. Most Sun - like stars become planetary nebulae at the end of their lives. Once a star consumes all of its hydrogen, the nuclear fuel that makes it shine, it expands to a red giant. The bloated star then expels its outer layers, exposing its hot core. Ultraviolet radiation from the core illuminates the discarded material, making it glow. The smoldering core, called a whi
