Switzerland Woman Voting Rights, 1957 (b/w photo)

A boy brings the voting box to the polling station in Unterbaech in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, on March 3, 1957, where a voting takes place on the question of compulsory civil service for women. The municipal council had decided to give women the right to vote for the first time. The women were required to cast their ballot papers in a separate box. However, the ballot for this municipality was revoked by the government of the canton of Valais and the Federation. The majority of cantons implemented female suffrage on the municipal and cantonal level in 1971.
