A woman casts her ballot on compulsory civil service for women in Unterbaech in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, on March 3, 1957. The women were required to cast their ballot papers in a separate box. However, the ballot for this municipality was revoked by the government of the canton of Valais and the Federation. The majority of cantons implemented female suffrage on the municipal and cantonal level in 1971.
