The daughter of William Watson-Armstrong, 1st Lord Armstrong of Bamburgh and Cragside (1863-1941), and his first wife, Winifreda Adye (1860-1914), Winifred Watson-Armstrong died aged 18 in 1912, the year in which this portrait was painted.
