Image description

"Finding of the three crosses and verification of the Cross", from "The stories of the True Cross"; fresco by Piero della Francesca (1452-1466). Constantine's mother, Elena had the ground on Golgotha dug and found the cross of Jesus and those of the two thieves. Unable to understand which could be the one on which Christ was nailed, Elena has them all exposed above the corpse of a recently deceased young man, who miraculously resurrects when he comes into contact with the sacred relic. Then Elena and her entourage kneel in adoration. Detail of the landscape in the background.
