Image description

Flemish School. Oil painting on panel, Possibly Grace Paget (née Farrington), Lady Sharington, Flemish School, circa 1540. A three-quarter length portrait, to left, dressed in black, her right hand on the arm of a chair upholstered in red, with marquetry armrests; an elaborate, fluted column in the background to the left, and a curtain [of indeterminate colour] to the right. Probably painted as the pendant to no.19, a Portrait of Sir William Sharington. The architectural background is here given feminine articulation: the column is fluted and its plinth ornate, compared to the sturdy Doric articulation of the architecture in P/19. The picture is a wreck and any identification with the work of Mor – or indeed any artist - is impossible. The fur and architecture in that picture is of high quality, suggesting - not Antonis Mor - but another Flemish, or Flemish-trained, artist such as Scrots or Vermeyen. Lacock, Wiltshire
