Juan Gris (b.1887 d.1927) was a Spanish painter whose still lifes are major works in the style of Synthetic Cubism. Gris started his career making drawings for newspapers in the Art Nouveau style. In 1906 he moved to Paris where he became a neighbour and friend of Pablo Picasso. Gris’s version of cubism was more classical and less spontaneous than his contemporaries. His work is characterised by rich colours and angular shapes. Between 1921 and 1927 however his style became increasingly lyrical.
