Tomás Giner
Spanish artist
Giner lived and worked in Zaragoza where he was in the service of Prince Ferdinand of Aragon (later Ferdinand II) from 1473. In 1458, he collaborated with Franc355 Gomar, sculptor to Archbishop Dalmau de Mur, on an altarpiece for the chapel of the archbishop's palace. Giner is mentioned in November 1459 as the painter of the high altar retable of St. Salvador in Zaragoza. For the same cathedral he also painted the altarpiece of St. Vincent Martyr (1462-1466), of which the main panel survives and is now in the Prado. In 1466 he painted the altarpiece of the Virgin and Child for the hermitage of La Corona, Erla, and that of St. Lawrence for the parish church in Magall363n; the main panel of the the latter project is still in the church. Giner's paintings, with their naturalistic Gothic style, are noted for their elegant coloration, formality, and the deep spirituality conveyed by the poses and faces of the figures. His style is akin to that of the Catalan painter Jaume Huguet, with whom Giner has been associated. Giner's work remained influential in Aragon until the end of the 15th century.
