Arno Breker

Received his primary education in the studio of his father, a sculptor. From 1919 to 1924 he studied at the Staatliche Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf, and subsequently lived in Paris ca. 1927 to 1933. After competing in a competition in 1936 to design the elements for the Olympic games, he was commissioned by Albert Speer to draw proposals for Hitler's vision of Berlin, effectively becoming the official sculptor of the Third Reich. Breker worked in a Neoclassical style that idealized the human, and particularly the male, form. After Germany's defeat in 1945, most of his work was destroyed by the Allies as it was associated with National Socialism. He began producing work again in the early 1960s, focusing on printmaking, and was active until the late 1980s.
