Image description

The precise observations of Tycho Brahe (1546-1601), the Danish astronomer who was able to determine the accurate position of over 777 fixed stars before the invention of the telescope, enabled his pupil and assistant Johannes Kepler to discover the three major laws of planetary motion. Brahe is well-known for discovering a new star in the constellation of Cassiopeia in 1572, which demanded the uneasy consideration by the intellectual community that the heavens above were as dynamic as the earth below. Brahe is also known for losing the bridge of his nose in a duel; the result of which is visible with closer inspection of this color portrait.
