Switzerland Artists Max Ernst (b/w photo)

Portrait of Max Ernst, German painter, scupltor and daist, in front of one of his paintings together with Dr. Meier, pictured in the year 1956 in the “Kunsthaus” in Berne, Switzerland. Ernst was born on April 2, 1891 in Cologne, Germany. In 1919 he founded together with Hans Arp and J. T. Baargeld the group “Dada W/3" and helped to cofound in 1924 in Paris, France the surrealistic movement. In the field of painting he developed a similar method he called “Grattage” (scratching of forms). 1941-1950 Ernst stayed in the United States, and after that returned to France. In his manifold work he was searching for the boundaries between dream world and reality; the subconscious was as well energy for creations as well as a field of expression to him.
