British (English) School. Oil painting on canvas, Possibly Jane Strickland, Mrs John Middleton, previously called Barbara Bellasis, Mrs Walter Strickland (1645–1708), English School, 1660s. Despite their labels, this and the following picture were clearly painted by the same artist at the same date, and are most probably of sisters.The only plausible candidates are the two surviving daughters of Sir Thomas Strickland.The sitter in this one certainly bears no resemblance to the accepted portrait of Barbara Bellasis, Mrs Walter Strickland. Jane Strickland was married to John Middleton (c.1652–1700) of Stockeld,Yorkshire, in 77.They had no issue and even her date of death remains unknown.
