Image description

Henry Treffry Dunn (Truro 1838 - 1899). Oil painting on panel, How they met themselves by Henry Treffry Dunn (Truro 1838 - 1899), circa 1896-98.Based either on the ink drawing of 1860 (Surtees No. 118) or more probably on one of the watercolour replicas of 1861 (Surtees No. 118 R.. 1; both Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge) and 1864 (Surtees No. 118 R.. 2). The subject is the Doppelganger legend: the lovers meet their doubles (their outlines highlighted) in a wood at twilight, an omen of impending death. Rossetti first drew it in 1851. He referred to the 1860 version as "the Bogie pen and ink". Wightwick Manor, West Midlands (Accredited Museum)
