Return of the Oligarchs to Samos. Pericles, with an Athenian fleet, visited Samos, which had defied Athens, overthrew the oligarchy, and established a democratic government there. But no sooner had he left the island than the deposed oligarchs returned by night, effected a junction with their supporters, and overpowered the garrison left by Pericles; after which they re-established themselves and declared open war with Athens.
