Image description

Capture of Lisbon, 1147. Affonso I is credited by historians with several (and by legend with innumerable) triumphs over the Moors, of which the greatest was undoubtedly the capture of Lisbon in 1147. The King began the campaign by taking the fortress of Santarem, after which his forces were swelled by the arrival of a large number of Crusaders who were on their way to Palestine. The capture of Lisbon in the face of strong opposition set the seal to Affonso's military reputation. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920).
