Image description

The Hon. John Collier (London 1850 – Hampstead 1934). Oil painting on canvas, George John Warren Vernon, 5th Baron Vernon (1803-1866) by The Hon. John Collier (London 1850 – Hampstead 1934), signed John Collier, painted in 1908 from a photograph of 1859. A three-quarter-length portrait, seated turned slightly to the right, gazing to the right, his chin resting on his left hand his right hand holding a book, he is seated at a table, and has receding hair and long sideburns and is wearing a black coat, pale brown waistcoat and dark grey trousers and a black bow tie. There is a large silver-gilt ornament on the table covered in a red velvet cloth on the right. Notable student of Dante, he was responsible for forming the library at Sudbury. On the death of his mother in 1837, when he inherited the Poynton estates, he assumed the name of Warren. Sudbury Hall, Derbyshire
