Image description

A propaganda poster issued by the British government in 1939 to show UK citizens the importance of keeping their colonies due to the lack of their own resources. It depicts Indian women harvesting jute, titled: 'THE EMPIRE'S STRENGTH - DO YOU KNOW THAT - INDIA - supplies all the jute for making sacks and sandbags: that more than half Britain's needs of livestock foods come from India as well as tea, rice, hides, skins, cotton and manganese - THESE ARE THE SINEWS OF WAR'. In 1947 India ceased to exist as a British colony. By Batty, Dora M. (1900-66)
