Image description

Rinaldo reclines, centre, holding a mirror in his right hand, leaning his left elbow on Armida's right knee. She sits on the right, braiding her hair in the mirror. On the left two soldiers and a dove(?) perched in a tree. Rinaldo's mantle is blue, shot with deep rose, Armida's gold. The subject of Rinaldo and Armida is taken from Torquato Tasso's Cerusalemme Liberata, Canto XVI, stanze 18-23. The composition of Rinaldo and Armida is inspired by Annibale Carracci's painting of the same subject now in the Galleria Nazionale di Capodimonte, Naples.
