Mrs Monck's dress is an imaginary creation based on dress depicted in grand 17th-century portraits. The transparent scarf and shiny silk dress set off the smoothness of her pale skin. However, probably only her head was painted from studies of the sitter herself. The dress and pose would have been based on studies of fabric and studio drawings. The outdoor setting (also imaginary) was a relatively new type of portrait background. Mrs Monck was the mother of Jane Monck, who married Sir William Middleton of Belsay Castle, Northumberland;
