Image description

During the strong earthquake on 14 March 1964 in the canton of Obwalden, a metal body of the roof of the college in Sarnen fell into the interior of the building. A college professor holds it in his hand and shows the cracks in the wall. At the beginning of 1964, earth tremors kept the canton of Obwalden in suspense for weeks. On 17 February the earth trembled for the first time in the Sarnen/Kerns area. Fireplaces and bricks fell from the roofs. Cracks appeared in the masonry of buildings. Early in the morning on March 14th, the strongest shot was fired. A total of five million francs of property damage was caused, and there were no deaths or injuries.
