Painting. Attributed to Francesco Salviati, called Cecchino. A portrait of a man, possibly the banker Bindo Altoviti. Half-length, standing, the body full front, the head three-quarters right. The right hand holds a folded paper inscribed 'BENE VIVERE ET LETARE' before his breast, the left across the waist. Flat black hat with gold bugles, black cloak and doublet with slashed sleeves, showing red under sleeves, white ruffles. The sitter has chestnut hair, moustache and full beard. A badge surmounted by cross keys, the insignia of a Papal Chamberlain (sic Sotheby's 1989) hangs from a chain around his neck. Brown background. Oil on panel. 35 1/4ins. by 31ins. Provenance: the Aldobrandini collection; the Camuccini collection, Rome called Sebastiano del Piombo; acquired with the Camuccini collection by the 4th Duke of Northumberland in 1854.
