Clare College was founded in 1326 by Chancellor of Cambridge University, later re-founded and re-endowed by Lady Elizabeth de Clare, grand-daughter of Edward I. Lady Elizabeth's ancester Richard de Clare had acquired the patronage of the priory of Anglesey Abbey in C12 and she was a generous benefactor giving to the priory the manor of Lakenheath, rents of the lands in Bottisham, Swaffham Bulbeck and Horningsea, and lands in Great and Little Walsingham.
