Image description

‘The Guards and Highlanders received by Omar Pasha and Marshal St Arnaud commanded by the Duke of Cambridge at Aladyn, 6 July 1854’. Watercolour by Lieutenant Francis Augustus Grant (1829–1854), 79th (Cameron Highlanders) Regiment of Foot, 1854. The title inscribed in pencil verso continues, ‘St Arnaud’s escort of Spahis on the right of the picture/ Names of the figures in the foreground –/ On the left St Arnaud on a white horse/ Next Omar Pasha on a chestnut horse/ Duke of Cambridge with his hand on his side/ Fourth figure Col Mc Donald ADC to ditto.’ According to the monthly returns the artist died on 1 October 1854, in the ‘Camp Balaclava Heights’. Since he is not recorded as either killed in action or dying as a result of wounds, it is presumed that Lieutenant Grant succumbed to disease.
