Switzerland Woman Voting Rights, 1957 (b/w photo)

The oldest and the youngst woman eligible to vote on the question of compulsory civil service for women, which took place on March 3, 1957 in Unterbaech in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. The municipal council had decided to give women the right to vote for the first time. The women were required to cast their ballot papers in a separate box. However, the ballot for this municipality was revoked by the government of the canton of Valais and the Federation. The majority of cantons implemented female suffrage on the municipal and cantonal level in 1971.
