Brussels tapestry from a set of six, c.1650 (wool & silk)

Each woven in wools and silks, from The Story of Theodosius II and the Apple, including one tapestry depicting Aelia Eudoxia receiving an apple from a poor man, one depicting Theodosius confronting Aelia Eudoxia with the apple and another depicting a battle scene, each within a fruiting laurel simulated picture frame border and blue outer slip, each with Brussels town mark, two tapestries with weaver's signature 'IEAN.LE.CLERC', one signed 'D.EGGERMANS', two 'D.E.', and one with remains of signature'..E..', each with minor losses especially to the light silks and blue outer slip, consolidated against a linen backing 10 ft. 3 in. x 12 ft. 2 in. (311 cm. x 370 cm.) 10 ft. 1 in. x 12 ft. 1 in. (307 cm. x 367 cm.) 10 ft. 1 in. x 10 ft. 4 in. (307 cm. x 313 cm.) 10 ft. 4 in. x 9 ft. 4 in. (314 cm. x 283 cm.) 10 ft. 2 in. x 7 ft. 8 in. (309 cm. x 234 cm.) 10 ft. 3 in. x 6 ft. 6 in. (311 cm. x 197 cm.) (6) The series was woven in cooperation between Jan Le Clerc (d. 1677) and Daniel II Eggermans and was therefore almost certainly commissioned by a marchand tapissier who would have owned the designs. Interestingly the designs are based both on Pieter Paul Ruben's (d. 1640) and Jacob Jordaen's (d. 1678) style.
