Standing against unfurled background, with canon sketched in at right. . Label on frame 'The Balaclave Drummer Boy, R. Buckner. Exhibited St James's Palace, Grenadier Guards Tercentenary Exhibition, June 1956, No.168. Painted circa 1854'. Barber, a drummer boy. The boy, whose name is given as Barber in the 1964 sale catalogue, was killed in the Crimean War; the painting is said to have been painted shortly afterwards. Unfinished.
