Modern Murals New York based design firm, Design Bureaux, licensed fifteen images of artist Giorgio Morandi's still life paintings for an inspiring decor project on the interior of the chic new bar and restaurant The Gander in Manhattan's trendy Flatiron District. Minimalist mastermind
Italian painter and printmaker, Giorgio Morandi, is renowned for his still life works, dedicating almost his entire practice to the art. Praised for the simplicity in tone and subject of his work, Morandi has been touted as one of the forerunner's of Minimalism.
Born in 1890, Morandi is identified to be one of the few Italian artists of his generation to avoid the influence of Fascism, and is quoted as saying "What interests me most is expressing what’s in nature, in the visible world, that is".
In 2009, two oil paintings by Morandi were chosen by President Barack Obama to hang as part of the White House collection.
An eye for design The interior and architectural design firm chose the neutral toned works of Morandi to complement the “warm and welcoming” setting of the American cuisine eatery. Active designers for over twenty years, Design Bureaux aim to "create projects that are culturally relevant, environmentally and economically responsible, informed by function and context, and that realize the highest level of craft and design excellence.”
