In this image, Jacques-Louis David portrays the Virgin Mary as protector and intercessor. St. Roch, the patron saint of plague-sufferers, appeals direcly to the Virgin, who intercedes with her son.

David was a French historical painter working in the Neo-Classical style. He is most famous for his portrait of Napoleon crossing the Alps (1800-01) and the death of French revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat (1793).
