Tom's Pics

From Edward Hopper to cuneiform tablets, here are our US Senior Account Manager's favourites from the archive

What is your role at Bridgeman?

I am a Senior Account Manager at the Bridgeman New York office helping clients license our images and footage for an array of different projects, be it book covers, textbooks, prints and posters – you name it.

What do you love most about the job?

The variety - our content is so diverse and also constantly growing. This attracts a variety of clients working on various projects that require unique images and so every day is different.

What misconceptions do clients most commonly have about the archive?

They often think that we just have classical fine art and historical images when we actually have a huge amount of contemporary photography and footage that one may not consider to be ‘typical’ Bridgeman content.

As discussed, we have been adding more and more contemporary photography to the archive that a client might not necessarily think Bridgeman would have. This is a prime example that we recently acquired. I love the perspective and the capture of natural light.

Nighthawks, 1942, Edward Hopper

We represent many major museums here in the US and the recent addition of the Art Insitute of Chicago was absolutely fantastic. This Hopper piece is so iconic and although it depicts a bygone era, I think everyone living in a US city today can identify with this image.

We have over 70,000 images from the British Library which is an unparalleled source of historical, literary and cultural content. Antique maps are always interesting especially when they are detailed with sea monsters, ornate compasses and other such features.

Fragment of cuneiform text from Boghazkoy, Hittite, c.14th century BC

I studied Archaeology and Anthropology at Oxford University and spent many an hour in the Ashmolean Museum and so I have a bit of a soft spot for their collection. It’s so hard to pick a favourite image from there but I chose this image of a Hittite cuneiform tablet which is impressive not only because of its age (2nd millennium BC) but also because tablets such as these hold the key to most of what is currently known about the Hittite civilization.

Inside Job: Discussions with Lucian Freud in his studio, David Dawson (b.1960) - clip

There are so many gems in our ever-growing footage collection but I picked this clip as it gives a candid and fascinating insight into Freud’s process. Lucian Freud is one of over 200 artists that we represent for copyright clearance and image reproduction. Take a look at our full list and find out more about each artist.
