David Alan Redpath Michie OBE RSA (1928 - 2015) was a Scottish painter and art teacher, best known for his colourful Expressionist art.
The son of architect Alastair Michie and Scottish painter Anne Redpath, Michie adopted a similar style to that of his mother. His vibrant, colourful works are inspired by the Scottish landscape, everyday objects and travelling around Continental Europe, the United States and Australia.
He studied at the Edinburgh College of Art, but his studies were interrupted when he had to do his National Service in 1947. After serving two years in the Signals Corps, he returned to Edinburgh College of Art where he was taught by William Gillies.
Michie's teaching career saw him lecture around the world. He taught at James Clarke’s School in Edinburgh, Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen and Edinburgh College of Art. He was also a visiting professor at the Academy of Fine Art in Belgrade and the University of California.
He was a member of the Royal Scottish Academy, the Society of Scottish Artists and the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. He was also a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a founding fellow of the Institute of Contemporary Scotland. He was made an OBE in 1997. Michie passed away in 2015.
