Image description

Shelfmark: Add. MS 14758, f.57. This 6th-century mausoleum is located roughly 1 mile southwest of Pasargadae. Until the early 19th century it was known as the tomb of the mother of Soloman, but Porter correctly re-identified it as that of Cyrus the Great, the founder of the Achaemenid Empire. Porter’s attribution was based on Morier’s identification of the area as Pasargadae, the first capital of the Empire, combined with a 2nd-century description of Cyrus’ tomb by the Greek historian Arrian.
