A portrait of Anne Hoare, grandaughter of Colt Hoare and wife of Sir George Mathew, as a child, seated on the ground, a book open on her knees, a tambourine and flute lying on the ground in front, a black dog beside her; at the right, hollyhocks, and in the background King Alfred's Tower. Alfred's Tower, a triangular edifice 160 ft high, was completed in 1772 on the top of Kingsettle Hill at the west side of the carriage drive surrounding Stourhead estate, the highest ground between Wiltshire and the coast of Wales. It was supposed to mark the spot where King Alfred set up his standard in 870 against the Danes. Stourhead, Wiltshire (Accredited Museum)
