Description
CAMERA LUCIDAS Four camera lucidas, c 1800s. Wollaston sty Four camera lucidas, c 1800s. Wollaston style camera lucida by West of London, Wollaston camera lucida, c 1800s, Laussedat camera lucida by William Lutz, Paris, c 1876 and Wollaston style camera lucida with three lense by William Ladd of London, 1872. A camera lucida is a small hand- held instrument used for drawing in daylight; rays of light are reflected by a prism to produce an image on paper. The lucida is often confused with the camera obscura which operates under a completely different optical principle. It was invented by Dr William Hyde Wollaston in 1806. ©SSPL/Science Museum
