Image description

Janina is in Albania, which was part of the Turkish empire at the time this w/c was painted. Edward Lear was one of comparatively few artists to travel so far afield at this time. This little view is one of Lear's more strongly coloured pictures, and is painted in thin washes of opaque paint. Lear has used his usual technique of strengthening the line drawing with brown ink. Edward Lear was well known for his nonsense poems, but was also a well-respected artist.
