Image description

Robert Hills's watercolours almost always consisted of views of cattle in landscape. The heights of the trees in this scene are exaggerated to emphasise the grandeur of the landscape. The golden browns and subdued greens of the colours were intended to create pictorial harmony, and are characteristic of many w/c views of the period. This w/c was probably painted specially for showing in one of the regular London exhibitions, since it is very detailed and quite strongly coloured;
