Image description

Sir Francis Grant PRA (Kilgraston 1803 - Melton Mowbray 1878). Oil painting on canvas, Frederick William Hervey, 1st Marquess of Bristol, MP, FRS, FSA (1769-1859) by Sir Francis Grant PRA (Kilgraston 1803 - Melton Mowbray 1878), 1845. A three-quarter-length portrait of an elderly man, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, seated on a red upholstered chair, at a circular table with a green cloth, various books and papers on table, wearing black jacket and trousers, high white collar; short grey hair; left hand on table, a brown leather book in his right resting on his knee. Brown draped curtain and book shelves in background.(According to Farrer, this is a copy after Grant). (See also P.245 (a) and (b) - store). (Grant's sitters' book records a half-length portrait of the Marquess in December 1844 and, in 1845, a small copy made of this and the 1843 portrait of the Marchioness. The 1845 copies are at Ickworth. The sketch (ICK/P/245) is presumably the initial idea for the 1844 work, and relates closely to the 1845 copy. It is the only oil sketch on canvas of this type known to have survived). Ickworth, Suffolk (Accredited Museum)
