On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Rather more of No.4 S. Barnabas' Square visible. I have for many years understood that it was in this house High Bailiff Jas. Quirk lived in the middle of the last century, before he migrated (about 1825), to Harold Tower on the Head, then recently built. My old friend James Oates, conducting an antiquarian party some years back, indicated No.3, just opposite, as the house. This was the house (notes later,) where Mr. 'Lebn' Clague {Wm. legal} stored hi fleet of small boats in the vaulted clellar every winter. In an old 1845 Directory, under 'Attorneys' I read:- Quirk J. (the HB) St. Barnabas Square. Quirk J. jun. Moore's Place. which were interchangeable terms. Both were the one place. (19.9.32) Mr Campbell of the Fish Market, living then in Spittal's house, assured me that James Quirk, H.B., was the occupant of No.4 prior to going to Harold Tower. (2.1.35 from Notes) A comedian, some years back, praising the amenities of his home, said that if he wanted to go out of his kitchen into his dining room, he simply stayed where he was."
