Image description

Bas-relief illustrating an earlier life of the Buddha: Vishvantara Jataka. China, Xinjiang, Tumshuq (Toqquz Sarai). End of the 6th beginning of the 7th century. Dryland. Sujati Jataka. As Prince Sujati rescues with his parents from the massacre of his family, the future Buddha vows to feed his parents refuge in the forest by offering them a little of his own flesh daily. Having demonstrated through this sacrifice his extreme generosite, the young man miraculously finds the integrity of his body while his parents regain their kingdom. The parents and their son are shown here twice, on the left in the forest, and on the right, parted in their princely dignity (originally there was a second figuration of the child).
