New Bond Street, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1932-34 (b/w photo)

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Some crowded architecture in New Bond Street, nearing its eastern end. The old house on L. no. 20; the rear of the Old Grammar School centre, and on R., the gable (just showing) no. 19, the first house to be taken down. The gleam of sunshine on the ground R. is from Durie Lane, and indicates the width of that thoroughfare. The ancient mansion, no. 6, that housed the Fourth Duke of Athol on occasion, had, between the front door and the opposite wall, a space of not more than twelve feet." : "The only photo I got of no. 20 at close range. I might add, at a strictly restricted range, with a non-focussing film camera. It had a close focus 4 or 5 feet for near objects, but all else at infinity, and in many of these snaps, I had to get what I wanted well inside 20, or even 15 feet. Hence so many at short range, out of focus. When I started, it was only with the idea of memories recorded for myself only."
