A pen and ink drawing showing Princess Victoria's beloved King Charles Spaniel, Dash. He is shown full-length, seated and facing right in profile. Inscribed below: Dash. Oct: 1833. on board the Emerald. Dash was given to Princess Victoria's mother, The Duchess of Kent, by her comptroller, Sir John Conroy, on 14 January 1833. By April that year Dash had become a close companion of the young Princess, often accompanying her wherever she went. Dash died at the end of 1840, and was buried at Adelaide Cottage in Windsor Home Park. A marble effigy was erected over the grave, bearing the inscription: "Here lies DASH, The favourite spaniel of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, In his 10th year, His attachment was without selfishness, His playfulness without malice, His fidelity without deceit, READER, If you would be beloved and die regretted, Profit by the example of DASH" Princess Victoria stayed at Norris Castle, Isle of Wight, from 1 July 1833 to 5 November 1833. During her stay she made many trips on a Yacht called The Emerald.
