Title
Thomas Hardy family graves
Photographer
Graham Salter
Description
Thomas Hardy family graves: Saint Michael's, Stinsford, outside Dorchester, Dorset. The English novelist (1840-1928) was baptised here in June 1840, lived nearby and worshiped here when young. His heart is buried in the graveyard, in the first grave seen here along with his 2 wives, Emma (d. 1912) and Florence (d. 1937), his siblings, parents, grandparents, uncle and aunt. Cecil Day Lewis (1904-1972), Poet Laureate, is buried in the 7th grave seen here, out of respect for Hardy, his mentor. He requested that he be buried as close to Hardy's grave as possible.
